![]() ![]() Once the original binary code was released, development continued as more stable and sophisticated releases were produced. FlightGear utilized custom graphics 3-D code, as well as other open source data, including flight models from NASA, and elevation data that is free for public use. Like many open source projects, FlightGear was started by enthusiast programmers who believed they could build a quality open source version of commercial software. Although not endorsed by the FlightGear project, several commercial products including "Flight Pro Sim", "Pro Flight Simulator", "Virtual Pilot 3D" have hit the market. The program is used by university researchers, aerospace engineering firms, interactive exhibits and, of course, thousands of flight simulation enthusiasts around the globe.īecause FlightGear is open source, developers can create commercial projects from the code. Begun by volunteers, it is continued by enthusiasts whose primary goal is to develop the world's best and most realistic free flight simulator. In July of this year, FlightGear celebrated its 15th anniversary. The first official release was the following year, and the latest release was made available in August of 2012. If you haven't already heard of it, let me introduce you to FlightGear, an open-source flight simulator produced by the FlightGear project.Ī flight simulation enthusiast named David Murr first kicked off the project in April of 1996. Wouldn't it be nice to find a high-quality, free flight simulator? Your prayers are answered, my friend. ![]() Over time, all those acquisitions add up to a serious investment. Not to mention the tens, maybe hundreds of aircraft that are beginning to fill up your hard drive. Once you acquired a quality program, it's not long before you purchased several others. Flight simulation can be an expensive hobby. ![]() I have no problem with this.ĮDIT: One more question: How doesn't look "right" the google maps scenery? You mean that the texture gets distorted with the elevation? simone04 Posts: 65 Joined: Tue 6:58 pm Location: Italy Callsign: MR-BEAN Version: 2020.1.1 OS: Ubuntu 18.04.Let’s be honest. I am aware of the "shadow problem" while using the Photoscenery method. Thanks for the clarification between CORINE and google mapsįor the hard disk space problem I have a lot of space in my hard drives(I have a 500GB Hard disk empty) Good news are you don't need building a new terrain to greatly enhance your region! Check: to learn about how to enhance the details of the current terrain. Ludomotico wrote in Mon 11:40 am:- CORINE is synthetic terrain and, as such, it is not "real". Check this video for some of its problems: texstures don't look right when you are close to the terrain. Maybe you can find compiled versions for this project, and you'll get Google Maps out of the box. Look for the project "osgearth for flightgear". All of them need an old version of FlightGear, as far as I know: Photoscenery has been tried a couple of times in FlightGear, and there are several ways to do this. There are plenty of discussions in the forum about using ortophotos in FlightGear. Google Maps (or equivalent photoscenery) is "real", but needs lots of hard disk and a very specific atmospheric configuration to look "right". CORINE is synthetic terrain and, as such, it is not "real". But CORINE won't help in your objective of using Google Maps (or equivalent) as textures. The equivalent data for Europe is CORINE. hgt files are used for elevation data, not textures. Oh, sorry: if you are trying to create a large texture to fill a tile completely, you are not on the right path. I converted the file from GeoTIFF to hgt format I tried to search for this NLCD data for europe Land but I didn't find anything.Īnyone now knows where to find this data? simone04 Posts: 65 Joined: Tue 6:58 pm Location: Italy Callsign: MR-BEAN Version: 2020.1.1 OS: Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS Now I have this little problem: the wiki says that I need to download NLCD data from here: īut this is for US Land. I converted the file from GeoTIFF to hgt format.I went to and downloaded the void-filled dataset from there.Read how to use TerraGear (including downloading terragear, and creating 3 folders: data, output, and work.) (the wiki didn't specify where to put this folder so I simply put in my desktop).Wlbragg wrote in Sun 8:30 pm:This is a decent starting point for the type of "image" you need. ![]()
